Mr. Murphy’s practice is significantly devoted to advising unions in both the private and public sector on a wide array of labor and employment issues. Mr. Murphy also has significant experience in representing the Firm’s clients in arbitration proceedings, including challenges to Employer imposed discipline upon bargaining unit members.

Mr. Murphy regularly represents public sector unions, providing advice with respect to their interactions with employer representatives in the areas of grievance adjustments, collective bargaining, and unfair labor practice charges. In addition, Mr. Murphy has significant experience in conducting internal union investigations and providing general advice with respect to internal union governance issues in both the public and private sector.

Mr. Murphy maintains an active practice in a number of federal courts, defending clients in a variety of cases including duty of fair representation claims and employment discrimination suits. Mr. Murphy also routinely represents the Firm’s clients in front of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (“EEOC”).

In his public sector practice, Mr. Murphy successfully represented correctional officers in multi-week hearings before administrative law judges in the aftermath of a state prison riot. Mr. Murphy also provides legal representation in the maritime industry, including participating in arbitration proceedings and collective bargaining negotiations with large international shipping companies.

Mr. Murphy provides advice and representation to clients seeking to organize unrepresented workers. Such advice includes handling matters before both the National Labor Relations Board and the Public Employee Relations Board of Washington, D.C. Mr. Murphy has also appeared before the Office of Employee Appeals in cases involving reductions in force (“RIFs”) imposed by the District of Columbia Public Schools.

In addition, Mr. Murphy advises the Firm’s clients concerning compliance with a variety of federal labor laws, including issues relating to the collection of union dues and agency fees. Finally, Mr. Murphy represents individuals in discrimination cases and cases brought under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Mr. Murphy is a member of the District of Columbia Bar Association, Labor and Employment Section. He is admitted to practice law in the District of Columbia and Maryland. Mr. Murphy is also a member of the bar of the Supreme Court of the United States, and many other federal appellate and district courts. Mr. Murphy is a graduate of the College of the Holy Cross (1990) and Brooklyn Law School (1996).
